Hi Brian,
Happy New Year to you and your family!
I've had a few days off from work with time on my hands and decided to delve into my favorite mystery. Unfortunately I never had time to go to the local LDS center and seriously investigate, but I've been playing around with the Newfoundland Grand Bank for a few hours.
My starting point is always the information from the "Blandford" bible from Bob. I tried all kinds of variations of Blandford, Warford, Fogo, etc. to see what came up.
I already know who Thomas, Maria and John Blandford are, and the dates of birth given in the Warford "Blandford" bible seem to tie in. The Mary and Henry Blandford listed in Bob's bible seem to be the previous generation of Blandfords. The next groups are all Warfords.
I believe I told you that I had found out that Thomas and his sister Maria Blandford had moved to Tilt Cove and settled there. Maria married David Oake. Thomas married Grace Piddle and had 3 daughters. After Grace died he moved back to Fogo and married again. He and his second wife had a son James. I'm going over all of this because I found a lot of coincidences with Tilt Cove.
The Mary Blandford in the first grouping (b. April 7, 1830) we had discussed might have married a Warford. I found a Mary Warford who died in South West Arm (Tilt Cove) Oct. 13, 1902 at age 72. That would put her year of birth at 1830). [ Reference is ngb. chebucto - Burials at Nippers Harbour & Tilt Cove (& area), from 1894-1932]
A Henry Warford, bach, 27 from Mansfields Pt. South West Arm, Green Bay, married a Sarah Puddecombe, spin. 27, Mansfields Pt. South West Arm, on Dec. 11, 1879. The witnesses were Thomas Blandford and Mary Warford. The date of birth for Henry Warford from Bob is Oct. 8, 1853. [Ref.is ngb. chebucto - Methodist Marriages, Nippers Harbour, Pacquet Circuit (missing from Vital Statistics: from parish records transcribed by Jill Marshall (2002) Part One]
A Lydia Warford, spin, 21, domestic servant, (South West Arm crossed out), married Josiah Bartlett, bach, 27, miner, Tilt Cove, on Aug. 13, 1903. Her parents are listed as Henry Warford and Sarah Puddecombe. Bob lists a Lydia Warford, date of birth Feb. 11, 1881. [Ref. ngb.chebucto - Methodist Marriages 1895-1909: Green Bay, Notre Dame Bay. PANL.]
A Mary Warford was buried Feb. 6, 1870 in Tilt Cove, age 11. The date of birth of the Mary Warford that Bob lists is June 3, 1859. [ ref. ngb. chebucto - Burials, Mission of Tilt Cove, 1868-1871 (from Anglican Church Records, Botwood)]
There is a Matthias Warford, bach, 23, Tilt Cove, smelter, who married a Rachel Dicks, spin. 19, Tilt Cove, in Tilt Cove on May 12, 1891. Bob's list shows a Matthias Warford Oct 08, 1869.
Also, a George Warford, bach, Tilt Cove, smelter, who married Violet Dolland, spin, Tilt Cove, on Feb. 13, 1890. No date of birth is given for George or Violet. However, Violet died at age 22 in 1892. Bob lists a George Warford with a date of birth of Feb. 11, 1865. [ references for both of the above are also Methodist Marriages, 1895-1909: Green Bay, Notre Dame Bay. PANL]
1894-McAlpine Directory for Twillingate District-Tilt Cove shows the following:
Warford, Henry, fisherman
Warford, George, fisherman
Warford, Matthew, fisherman (could be Matthias?)
I searched the other Warfords listed, from Harbour Main (Hopewell and Fox Trap), Harbour Grace, and Port de Grave. The first names aren't as close a match as those of Tilt Cove. Although the entries from Port de Grave are very early and perhaps were ancestors.
Please forgive all the bullets. I was trying to space things out and they proliferated!!!
Well, that's all I can do for now. I'll be in touch. Let me know if you come up with anything.
Regards,
Carol
