From the Newfoundland Encyclopedia it say's, "Carter, Capt. Peter
(1869-1959). Sealing Captain. Born Newell's Island, Bonavista Bay. Carter first went to the icefields in search of seals in 1882. By 1907 he was master of the Southern Cross and later commanded the Thetis, Beothic and Ungava. While in command of the Ungava he brought in one of the largest loads of seals on record: 1276 tonnes (1,256 tons), 49,259 pelts."⁴

Emigration	William John Winsor emigrated in 1780 from Poole, Dorset, England. to Greenspond at age 20. It is fairly safe to assume that John Windsor, like so many of his fellow-countrymen of his time, was engaged by one of the Poole merchants as an apprentice to come to Greenspond to engage in the fishing industry for the summer months – a practice that was common in England from 1750-1800. Historical references indicate that the apprenticeship agreement required that the young man would be in the service of the merchant for three summers, after which time, if he so desired, he could emigrate.³
Residence	He lived in Greenspond, Bonavista, Newfoundland, in 1783 at age ~24. John probably became a resident.³
Occupation	In 1799 William John Winsor had an established fishing rooms at Pond Head in Greenspond, Bonavista, Newfoundland.⁴
