About 1852 Joseph Clay was an Underground Bailiff. During those years an underground/colliery bailiff would set the pit to work each morning. Attend to all detail, arrange work, get each man to the coal bottom. See working place was properly ventilated and safe. Give a daily account of work done and of whole of underground expenses and wages and would give the colliery office a fortnightly account of same, the bill containing the amount earned by each man. There was one bailiff to each pit, bailiff was usually a man who had passed through all graduations of pit work and was raised to this position on account of ability, he would be subordinate to the colliery manager. In 1849 wage would be 26-28 shillings per week with House, garden and coal free. Quite a good job
